“Carry All Day Every Day”
Buying a concealed handgun can be a daunting task but knowing what to buy for your wife, mother, or daughter can be downright scary! Let’s face it we care too much to let them be the next victim of frivolous crime. That’s why we put a gun in their hand to begin with!
Here are a few tips to consider when purchasing a concealed handgun for your female loved one. For starters, make sure that you take her with you. Usually, the person that you are buying for is going to have a smaller hand than you so they are going to need a different size. It is very important to have the proper fit. Your trigger finger must be able to comfortably reach the trigger without affecting your grip, and you must be able to easily access any other functional buttons or levers on the gun, such as the magazine release and safety. She is going to want to see how it feels in her hand to make sure that it is comfortable. It’s just like buying a pair of shoes you have to try them on before you buy them.
Decide what features you want the gun to have. Example: Does she need a gun with a safety? Revolvers don’t usually have a mechanical safety and first time shooters usually have an easier time with a revolver. They also have a trigger pull that helps keep the gun honest when you go to re-holster. However a semi-automatic is more accurate in longer distances and the trigger pull is usually softer.
Another important thing is the ease of use. Make sure that whichever way you go (revolver or semi-automatic) she can manipulate the functions of the handgun. If it is a semi-automatic pistol, make sure she can pull the slide back, deactivate the manual safety and line up the sights. Which brings me to… , “choosing the right caliber.” The best bet is to try a few different ones and see which one she is most comfortable with. If the gun is so big that she can’t pick it up then what good is it? You also don’t want it to throw her back 10 feet when she fires it.
Next consider: How are you going to carry? Thinner, lighter guns are typically most popular for concealed carry because they are more comfortable. They are much easier to conceal than a larger handgun. If you’re only going to own one gun for concealed carry purposes only, you should consider handguns that you would be willing to carry at all times. Remember that versatility and ease are key factors because a gun that is difficult or complicated to operate will only hinder your ability to accurately and efficiently defend yourself and others. You will only have seconds or less to act and anything that slows you down puts you and others in danger.
Regardless of which concealed handgun is chosen it is important that she goes to the gun range to make sure that she is proficient with it. It is also important that she is comfortable with the concealed accessories that are used to successfully carry her gun with her at all times
